Velvet lamination — also sold as soft touch or suede laminate — is a matt film with a fine texture that feels like suede under the thumb. It is the finish people notice before they read the card, and the reason it is specified for luxury, hospitality, real estate, clinics and legal practices.
How it differs from matt lamination
Ordinary matt lamination stops glare. Velvet does that too, but it also changes the feel: the card grips the fingers slightly instead of sliding. It also deepens blacks and dark colours noticeably — a black velvet card reads far richer than the same black on matt film.
Why the thickness matters
Our velvet cards are built on 760 micron stock — roughly double a standard business card. A soft-touch finish on a thin card feels wrong in the hand; the weight is half of what makes the effect work, which is why we do not offer velvet on light stock.
What pairs well with it
- Spot UV — gloss varnish on the logo only. The contrast between a glossy mark and the suede background is the single most effective use of velvet.
- Gold foil — real metallic foil, which reflects against a matt ground instead of disappearing into it.
- Rounded corners — softens the card and stops the corners scuffing, which shows more on a matt surface than a glossy one.
One thing to know
Velvet film shows fingerprints and scratches more than gloss, especially on large solid dark areas. It is not a drawback for a card that lives in a wallet, but avoid full-bleed black on a card you will hand out from an open box for months.
