If you have ever been told you cannot order 200 flyers or 50 branded mugs in Dubai, you have met a minimum order quantity (MOQ). In practice the numbers are predictable: 500 pieces for business cards and flyers, 500 cups for double-wall printed paper cups, 100 pieces for most metal and hard-goods gift items because that is a full carton, and 25,000 for the cheapest single-wall bulk cups. MOQs are not a sales tactic — they come from setup cost, sheet layout and carton packing. Once you understand which of the three is driving the minimum on your job, you can usually cut your cost per piece by 40–60% without ordering anything you do not need.
What an MOQ actually is
An MOQ is the smallest quantity a printer can run before the fixed costs of the job stop making sense. Every print job has two cost layers: a fixed setup cost that does not change whether you print 100 or 10,000, and a variable cost per piece of material and ink. On a short run the setup dominates. On a long run it disappears into the per-unit price. The MOQ is simply the point where the printer can quote a price a customer will accept.
You can see this in one line of real pricing. 500 matt-laminated business cards cost AED 99, about 20 fils per card. Push the same job to 1,000 and it costs AED 119 — 11.9 fils per card. You paid AED 20 more and got 500 extra cards, because almost the entire AED 99 was setup. That gap is the MOQ economics in miniature.
The three things that set a minimum
1. Setup and plates (offset printing)
Offset presses need plates, and plates are made per colour per job. Whether you print 500 flyers or 20,000, the plate cost is identical. This is why our A3 flyer at 100 gsm is AED 330 for 500 (66 fils each) but AED 3,120 for 20,000 (15.6 fils each) — a 4× drop in unit price for a 40× jump in quantity. Anything printed offset will show this curve.
2. Sheet imposition
Printers do not print one card at a time; they print a large sheet and cut it down. A business card sheet holds a fixed number of cards, so a 250-card order still consumes a sheet run and the trimming that goes with it. That is why 500 is the natural floor for cards — it is the first quantity where the sheet is used efficiently.
3. Carton packing (gift items)
Corporate gifts are a different animal. They are not printed on a sheet, they are stocked in cartons. Our metal business cards ship 100 pieces to a carton, so 100 is the minimum. NFC smart pens ship 500 to a carton. The MOQ on a gift item is almost always the carton quantity, not a printing constraint — and once you know that, you know exactly where the next natural break sits. Where the price actually drops
The unit-price curve is steep at first and then flattens. On the A3 flyer, going from 500 to 1,000 pieces cuts the unit price from 66 fils to 48.5 fils — a 27% saving for AED 155 more. Going from 1,000 to 2,000 cuts it to 29 fils, another 40% off. But going from 10,000 to 20,000 only moves you from 16.7 fils to 15.6 fils. The money is in the first two or three breaks, not the last one.
The same shape appears on cups. A 500-cup run of double-wall 8 oz is AED 1.02 per cup; 1,000 brings it to 76 fils, 2,000 to 61.5 fils, and 5,000 to 43 fils. Beyond that you are into bulk paper cup territory, where 25,000 single-wall cups with a one-colour print land at roughly 12 fils each.
Practical rule: find the quantity you will realistically use in 6–9 months, then check the price one break above it. If the jump costs less than 25% more money for double the quantity, take it. If it costs more than that, stay where you are.
Six legitimate ways to spend less
- Combine artwork on one run. Ten staff members each needing 100 business cards is a 1,000-card job, not ten 100-card jobs. Same sheet, same setup, one price.
- Drop a colour on bulk cups. Single-wall bulk cups are priced by ink colours — each extra colour adds AED 500 per 25,000 cups. A strong one-colour logo often reads better on cup stock anyway.
- Move the finish, not the quantity. Matt lamination at 350 gsm (AED 119 per 1,000) versus gold foil on the same card (AED 299 per 1,000) is a bigger cost lever than any quantity decision at that scale.
- Print undated material. Flyers with a date on them are a one-time job at a small quantity. The same flyer with a QR code instead of a date can be printed at 5,000 and used all year.
- Use the digital short run when you truly need few. For a handful of very premium cards, the 700 gsm velvet card starts at 100 pieces — expensive per card, but far cheaper than paying for 1,000 you will never hand out.
- Clear the free-delivery threshold. Delivery is free on orders over AED 800. Two AED 500 orders placed a month apart both pay delivery; one combined order does not.
How to order without guessing
Send us the item, the quantity you think you need, and the deadline — on WhatsApp +971 52 210 0909 or by calling 0522100909. We will come back with the MOQ, the price at your quantity and the price at the next break, so you can see the trade-off in numbers before deciding.
Standard production is 3–5 working days after final artwork approval; bulk gift items and large cup runs need longer, so ask when you enquire. Artwork should be a print-ready PDF in CMYK at 300 dpi with 3 mm bleed — and if you do not have one, design is free with every order. We deliver across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain, free over AED 800, or you can collect from 32 Sheikh Zayed Road, Office 706, Dubai.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum order for business cards in Dubai?
500 cards for the standard matt-laminated 350 gsm card at AED 99. If you only need a small number of premium cards, the ultra-thick 700 gsm velvet card with Spot UV is available from 100 pieces at AED 740. See all options in business card printing.
Why can't I order just 100 flyers?
Because the plate, setup and trimming cost the same at 100 as at 500, so the price per flyer at 100 would be higher than most customers would accept. Our A3 flyer MOQ is 500 at AED 330. If you genuinely need under 100 copies, a digital short run is the right route — ask us for a quote rather than assuming it is impossible.
Do corporate gifts have an MOQ?
Yes, and it is usually the carton quantity rather than a printing limit. Metal business cards come 100 to a carton; NFC smart pens come 500 to a carton. Branding adds its own minimum, since a laser or pad-print setup has a fixed cost. Tell us your budget and we will point you at items whose carton size matches it.
Is it cheaper per piece to order more?
Almost always, but the saving is front-loaded. On A3 flyers, doubling from 500 to 1,000 saves 27% per piece; doubling from 10,000 to 20,000 saves about 7%. Take the early breaks, ignore the late ones unless you will genuinely use the stock.
Can I split one print run between two designs?
For business cards, yes — different names on the same layout print together at no extra cost, which is how most companies order for a whole team. For fully different artwork, it becomes two setups and is quoted as two jobs. Ask before you design, because how you lay the files out changes the price.
What is the cheapest branded item I can order in bulk?
Single-wall 4 oz paper cups at 25,000 pieces with a one-colour print work out at about 12 fils each — AED 3,120 for the run. For hard goods, metal business cards at 70 fils each are the lowest per-piece item in the gift range.
Do prices include VAT and delivery?
All prices shown include VAT. Delivery is free across the UAE on orders over AED 800; below that a delivery charge applies, which is another reason to combine orders rather than split them.
Talk to us before you set the quantity
