An NFC business card is a card with a small chip inside it. You hold it against the back of a phone, the phone opens a link, and your contact details, website or WhatsApp appear on screen — no app, no typing, no photo of a paper card that never gets saved. In Dubai they now cost from AED 33 for a ready-to-use tap card, AED 50 for a magnetic phone cardholder with the chip built in, and AED 3.71 per piece for NFC smart pens if you want to hand the technology out at an exhibition. This guide covers how they actually work, how to program one in about two minutes, real prices, and — honestly — when a printed card still beats them.
How an NFC business card works
NFC stands for Near Field Communication, the same short-range radio standard behind contactless payment. The card contains a passive chip and a thin antenna. It has no battery and never needs charging: the phone's own NFC reader powers the chip for the fraction of a second it takes to read it.
What the chip stores is usually just a URL. That URL points at a hosted profile page carrying your name, title, company, phone, email, website, social links and often a "save to contacts" button. When someone taps, their phone shows a notification, they open it, and the profile loads in their browser. On iPhone (XR and newer) and virtually every modern Android, the reader side needs no app installed at all. That is the single most important practical fact about these cards: the person receiving your details does not have to do anything special.
Most cards also carry a printed QR code as a fallback, which covers older phones and anyone whose NFC is switched off.
What an NFC card is not
It is not a tracking device, it does not read anything from the other person's phone, and it does not transfer data by itself. It hands over one link. Everything else — what that link shows, and whether it collects a lead — depends on the profile page behind it.

| Item | What it is | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Santhome Card — NFC digital business card, black | Credit-card size, fully customisable front, tap or QR, app-free | AED 33 |
| Santhome Card — NFC digital business card, white | Same card, white finish | AED 33 |
| ROMA — 2-in-1 magnetic cardholder with built-in NFC card | Snaps onto the back of the phone; holds physical cards and shares digitally | AED 50 |
| GPS tracker / anti-loss tag with NFC business card | Rechargeable locator tag that doubles as a tap-to-share card | AED 56 |
| NFC smart pens | Aluminium pen with NFC chip, laser or UV logo branding, carton of 500 | AED 3.71 each |
| Printed matt-laminated business cards, 350 gsm | For comparison — 1,000 printed cards, both sides | AED 119 |
Read the table sideways and the real decision becomes obvious. One NFC card at AED 33 costs roughly what 280 printed cards cost. An NFC card is a personal tool you keep in your wallet for years; a printed card is something you give away and never see again. They are priced for two completely different jobs, which is why most people who buy one still order the other.
Setting one up (about two minutes)
Cards like the Santhome Card arrive with their own hosted profile — you scan the code on the card, fill in your details and it is live. If you want to point a chip at a link of your own choosing, or you bought NFC smart pens for an event, program them yourself:
- Install a writer app such as NFC Tools on an Android phone or iPhone, and turn NFC on in phone settings.
- Open the app and go to Write → Add a record.
- Choose URL / URI — the most reliable record type across phones. Common choices: your website, a WhatsApp chat link in the form
https://wa.me/9715XXXXXXXX, or your digital profile URL. - Paste the link, press OK, then press Write.
- Hold the top of the pen — or the middle of the card — against the back of the phone until the app confirms the write.
Two things worth doing before you hand anything out. First, test on both an iPhone and an Android; NFC antenna positions differ and what taps instantly on one may need repositioning on the other. Second, if the link is a marketing destination, use a URL you control and can redirect later — chips can be rewritten, but not once they are in 500 people's pockets.
Who these actually work for in the UAE
Real estate agents and sales teams get the most out of them. Viewings and open houses are exactly the situation where a paper card ends up in a car door pocket, and a tap that opens a listings page or a WhatsApp chat converts far better. Consultants and founders use them at networking events, where the card doubles as a conversation opener. Exhibition teams take the pen route — at AED 3.71 you can put 500 branded, tappable pens on a stand and still spend less than a mid-size stand graphic.
They fit less well where a card is handed over as a formality rather than as a lead: government offices, large tender submissions, and any meeting where the card goes into a stack for filing. In those settings the physical object with a logo on it is the point, and a printed card from our business card range does the job better and 280 times more cheaply.
NFC card or printed card? Use both
The practical setup most Dubai professionals settle on: one NFC card in the wallet for people you meet one-to-one and want to follow up with, plus a box of printed cards for everyone else. That combination costs about AED 152 — AED 33 for the tap card and AED 119 for 1,000 matt-laminated printed cards — and covers every situation you will meet in a year.
If the printed card is doing serious work on your behalf, spend the difference on the finish rather than on the technology. A 760 micron velvet-laminated card with Spot UV is AED 279 per 500, and gold foil on the same stock is AED 389 per 500. Those are the cards people keep. See Spot UV, foiling and embossing explained for what each finish does.
How to order
NFC cards, cardholders and smart pens are stock items — tell us the quantity and finish, and we confirm availability and delivery the same day. Branding on the pens is done by laser marking (permanent engraved logo) or UV printing (full colour) on the barrel, and needs artwork as a vector file. Printed cards run alongside them on the usual 3–5 working day production after final artwork approval.

Frequently asked questions
Do NFC business cards work on iPhone?
Yes. iPhone XR and newer read NFC tags in the background with no app installed — the notification appears on the lock screen when the card touches the top of the phone. Older iPhones may need the control-centre NFC reader, which is why every card also carries a QR code.
Does the other person need an app?
No. Reading the card requires nothing beyond a modern phone with NFC enabled. An app is only needed on your side if you want to write a custom link to a blank chip.
Can I put my logo on an NFC card?
Yes — the entire front face of the Santhome Card is customisable, so most companies print the logo, name and title there and let the chip carry everything else. Send the artwork on WhatsApp and we will confirm the print area before production.
How much does an NFC business card cost in Dubai?
AED 33 for a ready-to-use tap card in black or white, AED 50 for the ROMA magnetic cardholder with the chip built in, and AED 56 for the GPS tracker version that doubles as a locator tag. NFC smart pens are AED 3.71 each in cartons of 500.
Can the link on the card be changed later?
Chips can be rewritten with a writer app, and hosted profiles can be edited any time without touching the card. The safe approach for anything you distribute in quantity is to write a URL you control, so you can redirect it later without reprogramming a single item.
Do NFC cards replace printed business cards?
For one-to-one networking, largely yes. For volume handouts, events where cards are collected, and formal submissions, no — and at AED 119 per 1,000 printed cards there is no financial reason to choose one over the other. Most of our customers order both.
Is there a minimum order?
NFC cards and cardholders can be ordered as single pieces. NFC smart pens ship in cartons of 500. Printed cards start at 500 pieces.
