Here is what the premium finishes actually cost. On 1,000 business cards in Dubai, plain art paper with no lamination is AED 89.00. Matt lamination takes it to AED 170.00. Adding spot UV on top of matt lamination costs AED 290.00 — so the spot UV itself is about AED 120 per 1,000 cards. Gold foil on matt lamination is AED 299.00. Both finishes together on 400 gsm stock is AED 359.00. This guide explains what each process does, when it earns its price, and when it quietly ruins a card.
What each finish actually is
Spot UV
A clear, high-gloss varnish applied to selected areas of the card only — your logo, a monogram, a pattern — while everything around it stays matt. It adds no colour. The whole effect comes from the contrast between a dead-flat matt laminate and a wet-looking gloss shape sitting on it, which you notice by tilt and touch rather than by looking straight at it. Spot UV needs a matt or velvet laminated card underneath; putting it on a glossy card gives you gloss on gloss and nobody sees anything.
Foiling
Metallic foil stamped onto the card with heat and pressure, most often gold or silver. Unlike spot UV, foil is opaque and changes the colour of what it covers, so it works on artwork you want to read as metal: a logo mark, a name, a rule. Foil is genuinely reflective — it catches light across a room in a way that a printed gold ink never does, because printed gold is just yellow-brown ink.
Embossing and debossing
A physical deformation of the card. Embossing pushes the artwork up from the surface using a matched male and female die; debossing presses it down. There is no ink and no varnish involved — the effect is purely tactile, and on an uncoated or velvet stock it is the most expensive-feeling finish available. It requires a custom die per design, which is why it prices differently from the rest and is quoted per job.
Velvet (soft-touch) lamination
Not strictly a decoration, but it belongs in this list because it is the substrate the other finishes look best on. Velvet lamination gives a suede-like surface that kills reflection completely, which makes spot UV and foil far more dramatic on top of it. It is also the thickest option in our range — 760 microns — so the card has real weight in the hand.

The economics: where the money actually goes
Three numbers are worth internalising before you spec a card.
- Doubling from 500 to 1,000 costs far less than double. Matt laminated cards run from AED 99.00 at 500 and AED 170.00 at 1,000. The setup is the same job either way; you are only paying for more paper through the press. If there is any chance you will reorder within a year, order 1,000.
- Spot UV costs roughly AED 120 per 1,000 over the same card without it (AED 290.00 versus AED 170.00). That is about 12 fils per card for a finish people physically notice. It is the best value premium finish in the range.
- Foil and thickness are what push a card past AED 400. Gold foil plus spot UV on 760-micron velvet is AED 590.00 per 1,000 — nearly seven times the plain unlaminated card. That is a real budget decision, not a rounding error, and it should be driven by who receives the card rather than by taste.
The corollary: if you hand out 1,000 cards a year across a sales team, spend on spot UV. If you hand out 200 cards a year and each one lands with someone signing a seven-figure contract, the velvet-and-foil card at AED 590.00 per 1,000 is defensible — you are spending AED 0.59 a card on an object that stays on a desk.
Design rules that decide whether the finish works
Premium finishes fail more often from artwork than from production. Four rules cover most of it.
- Supply the finish as a separate spot layer. Spot UV, foil and emboss areas each need their own layer in the file, drawn in 100% solid black, with everything else hidden. Do not draw them in gold or grey and hope the intent reads — the plate is cut from that layer exactly as supplied.
- Keep the finish area vector and generous. Hairlines under about 0.5 pt and text under 6 pt do not hold reliably in foil or spot UV. Registration tolerance means a very thin foil rule can drift off its printed counterpart.
- Do not foil over the full card. Foil is a stamping process; large solid areas are prone to pinholing and fill unevenly. Foil a logo, a name, a border — not a background.
- Choose a matt or velvet base for spot UV. Gloss lamination plus spot UV is the single most common wasted spend on business cards. The contrast is what you are paying for, and gloss removes it.
Standard file setup is unchanged: CMYK, 300 dpi at final size, 3 mm bleed, fonts outlined, and any critical text at least 4 mm inside the trim. No print-ready file? Design is free with every order through the free design service.
Which finish for which business
- Property, legal, private banking, consultancy: velvet lamination with spot UV on the logo, 760 mic. The thickness does as much work as the finish.
- Hospitality, salons, jewellery, luxury retail: gold foil. It photographs well and reads as intentional at arm's length.
- Agencies, studios, architecture: custom shape with spot UV — AED 299.00 per 1,000 buys a card people keep because it is not rectangular.
- Sales teams handing out volume: matt lamination with round corners at AED 159.00 per 1,000, or add spot UV at AED 245.00. Round corners survive a pocket better than square ones.
- Contractors, trades, anything that lives in a van: PET glossy laminated 760 mic at AED 289.00. It is effectively waterproof and does not soften.

Frequently asked questions
How much does spot UV add to a business card in Dubai?
About AED 120 per 1,000 cards. Matt laminated cards are AED 170.00 per 1,000 and the same card with spot UV is AED 290.00. On 500 cards, spot UV versions start from AED 189.00.
Is gold foil or spot UV more expensive?
They are close on matt lamination — AED 290.00 for spot UV and AED 299.00 for gold foil, per 1,000. The gap opens up on premium stocks: gold foil on brilliant paper is AED 680.00 per 1,000.
Can I have spot UV and foil on the same card?
Yes, and it is a common combination. On matt laminated 400 gsm it is AED 359.00 per 1,000, or AED 379.00 with round corners. On 760-micron velvet lamination it is AED 590.00 per 1,000.
What is velvet lamination and is it worth it?
Velvet, also called soft-touch, is a suede-like laminate that removes all reflection and gives the card a distinctive feel. It is worth it when the card is the main physical object your brand hands over — and it is the best base for spot UV, because the matt-to-gloss contrast is at its strongest.
Do you print embossed business cards?
Yes. Embossing and debossing are quoted per job because each design needs a custom die. Send the artwork on WhatsApp +971 52 210 0909 for a price.
What file do you need for spot UV and foil?
A print-ready PDF in CMYK with the spot UV and foil areas on separate layers, drawn in 100% solid black vector, 3 mm bleed, fonts outlined. If you do not have that, design is free with every order.
How long do premium business cards take?
Standard production is 3–5 working days after final artwork approval, including foiling and spot UV. Express 500-card runs on brilliant paper are available at AED 250.00.
