An architecture or interior design studio in Dubai prints four things that win work: a bound project portfolio, a pitch folder that holds the proposal, mood boards mounted on rigid stock, and large-format plan prints for site and client reviews. At live store prices that is AED 270 for 10 A1 colour sheets, AED 150 for a single bound A4 12-page booklet, AED 1,420 for 50 landscape A4 catalogues, AED 245 for foam/Forex board printing, and AED 475 per 1,000 for A4 brochures on 100 gsm wood-free. Everything below is a real line in the brochure catalogue and folders range with today's price.

The four print jobs that matter in a design studio

Design practices in Dubai have an unusual print profile. Volumes are low — you are not printing 10,000 flyers — but quality expectations are the highest of any sector, because the printed artefact is a direct sample of your eye for material and detail. A client who receives a portfolio with a cracked spine or a muddy render has already learned something about how you supervise a site.

That pushes studio printing toward short runs on heavy stock with careful finishing. The four jobs, in order of how often they decide a pitch:

  1. Project portfolio or company profile — bound, landscape, 16–48 pages, left behind after the meeting.
  2. Pitch folder — holds the fee proposal, drawings and material samples; the first thing the client touches.
  3. Mood and material boards — mounted rigid prints, used in concept presentations and FF&E sign-offs.
  4. Plan prints — A1 and A0 drawing sets for site meetings, consultant coordination and authority submissions.

Project portfolios and company profiles

The decision that drives cost here is binding, not paper. Perfect binding (glued spine) looks like a published book and is right from about 40 pages up. Saddle-stitch (two staples through the fold) is cleaner and cheaper under 40 pages but cannot carry a printed spine. Wire-O lies flat, which matters if the client will photograph a spread.

For one-off and very short runs, a single bound A4 12-page booklet on 170 gsm is AED 150 — which is the right spend when you need three copies for a shortlist interview tomorrow. For a proper studio portfolio that you hand out through the year, 50 landscape A4 catalogues on 170 gsm come in at AED 1,420, or around AED 28 per copy. Push to 1,000 copies with a 300 gsm cover and the per-copy cost drops to roughly AED 3.26 (open A4, close A5) — but 1,000 portfolios is rarely the right call for a design practice, because your project list changes every nine months.

Our deeper breakdown of page counts, cover weights and binding types sits in the booklet and catalogue printing guide and the company profile printing guide.

Pitch folders: where studios under-spend

A fee proposal handed over loose, or in a plastic sleeve, actively damages a premium positioning. A printed A4 presentation folder with a pocket, printed on 400 gsm art matt with velvet lamination and 3D gold foil, is AED 1,425 for 100 units — AED 14.25 each. For a practice that pitches twenty times a year, one order covers five years of pitching at a cost that disappears inside a single fee proposal.

Velvet (soft-touch) lamination is the detail worth paying for in this sector. It reads as material quality in the hand, which is the same language your drawings are speaking. Spot UV over velvet — a gloss logo on a matt surface — is the finish most used by Dubai design firms. See presentation folder printing for pocket configurations and die-cut options.

For client-facing meetings and site walks, the leather-style portfolio with zipper at AED 35, the cork-cover B5 folder with notepad and pen at AED 18.50, and the CROSS A5 zip writing folder with pen gift set at AED 138 work as branded studio kit — the last one as a handover gift for a completed project.

Mood boards and material boards

Mood boards need a rigid substrate that survives being carried to a site office and propped against a wall. Foam/Forex board printing is AED 245 and is the standard choice: light, rigid, cuts cleanly to any size, and takes a full-colour print with accurate render colour. Mount at A2 or A1 for concept presentations; go larger only if the meeting room can take it.

A warning on colour: renders and material swatches are the hardest thing in printing to match. Screens are RGB and additive; print is CMYK and subtractive. A deep teal that glows on a monitor will print flatter. If a specific brand or material colour must be exact, specify a Pantone and ask for a hard-copy proof before the full board set runs — the reasoning is in Pantone vs CMYK and CMYK vs RGB.

Plan prints and drawing sets

Full-colour A1 printing is AED 270 for 10 sheets — AED 27 per sheet — which covers a coordination set for a mid-size project. A set of 15 single-sided custom A4 posters is AED 140, useful for standard detail sheets or drawing-register prints that get pinned up in the site office.

Three practical notes for drawing sets in the UAE:

  • Export flattened PDFs. Layered CAD exports with transparency effects re-render unpredictably. Flatten, embed fonts, and check line weights below 0.18 mm — they can drop out entirely.
  • Keep a title-block margin. Trim tolerance on large format is a couple of millimetres. Anything critical within 5 mm of the edge is at risk.
  • Site copies versus client copies. Site sets get folded, marked up and rained on during the winter months — print those economically and spend the budget on the client set.

Paper choices that read as design-literate

Studios are judged on stock selection, so three guidelines:

  • Portfolio interiors: 150–200 gsm silk or matt. Glossy art paper flashes under meeting-room downlights and makes renders look cheap. Matt holds detail in shadow areas, which is where architectural photography lives.
  • Portfolio covers: 300–400 gsm with velvet lamination. The weight is what signals quality before anything is read.
  • Boards and plans: for mood boards, mounted print on rigid board. For plans, standard large-format stock — there is no advantage in heavy paper on a drawing that will be folded.

If you are unsure which weight to specify, the paper GSM guide maps every common weight to the right job.

How to order

  1. Send artwork as a flattened, print-ready PDF with 3 mm bleed and fonts embedded. For plan sets, send one PDF per sheet size. The artwork checklist lists everything we need.
  2. Tell us the deadline and the audience. A shortlist interview on Thursday and a stock-office reprint are different jobs; we will quote the finishing accordingly.
  3. Ask for a proof when colour is critical. A digital soft proof is free; a hard-copy proof adds a day and is worth it on any board set or portfolio with brand colours.
  4. Delivery. Short-run digital work — single portfolios, plan prints, boards — typically turns around in 1–3 working days in Dubai. Offset runs of 1,000 brochures or folders run 4–7 working days. Sharjah and Ajman are same-week; Abu Dhabi and Al Ain add a day.

FAQ

Can you print a single portfolio copy, or is there a minimum?

Single copies are standard for this sector. A bound A4 12-page booklet on 170 gsm is AED 150 for one. For three to ten copies, digital printing stays the right process; above about 300 copies offset becomes cheaper per unit.

What size should a design portfolio be?

Landscape A4 is the default in Dubai — it suits wide photography and sits on a meeting table without dominating it. B4 (34 x 24 cm) is the step up when you want presence; it costs AED 650 per 1,000 against AED 610 for A4 on the same 170 gsm glossy, so the size upgrade is nearly free at volume.

How fast can you turn around an A1 plan set?

Same-day or next-day in most cases if artwork arrives as a flattened PDF before midday. Ten A1 colour sheets are AED 270. Send the full set together — drip-feeding sheets is what causes missed site meetings.

Do you print on foam board, and what sizes?

Yes — foam/Forex board printing is AED 245 and we cut to the size you specify, including non-rectangular shapes. A2 and A1 are the usual mood-board formats; for wall-mounted material boards, tell us the wall dimension and we will advise the panel split.

Can you match a specific material or brand colour?

On CMYK presses we get close, and with a specified Pantone plus a hard-copy proof we get closer still. Exact matches on metallics, fluorescents and deep saturated blues are not achievable in four-colour process — if the colour is non-negotiable, tell us at quotation stage and we will advise whether a spot colour run is justified.

Do you handle tender and authority submission sets?

Yes — bound tender documents with printed tabs and dividers are a routine job. See tender and bid document printing for binding options and same-week turnaround.
