A printed divider is a small job with an outsized effect: it is what turns a 120-page tender, annual report or training manual into something a reader can navigate in five seconds. The specification that works for almost every job in Dubai is A4 card at 300–400gsm, matt or velvet laminated both sides, with a 50mm bank tab extending 12–15mm beyond the page edge. Dividers are quoted per job rather than listed as a stock SKU, because tab count, position and reinforcement change the price more than quantity does — but the card and finishing costs underneath them are published, and this guide shows you exactly what they are.

Below: how to specify a divider set that survives handling, the standard tab geometries used in the UAE, and the real 2026 store prices for the stock, lamination and binding that make up a divider quote. Browse the folder range and the card-stock range to see the same materials priced on their own.

What a divider set is actually made of

Strip the job back and a printed divider is three decisions:

The body stock. 160–200gsm is paper, not a divider: it curls and dog-ears within a week. 300gsm art card is the practical minimum for a document that gets opened more than a dozen times. 400gsm art matt is the standard for tender submissions, board packs and anything that will be handled by multiple readers — it is the same stock we use for A4 pocket folders, and it holds a tab without flexing. For a reference-manual divider that lives on a desk for years, 760 micron board — the thickness used for our thick 760 mic cards — is the heavy-duty option.

The lamination. This is where divider jobs are won or lost. An unlaminated tab tears at the root within a month. Matt lamination on both sides roughly triples the life of the tab and stops the printed colour scuffing; velvet (soft-touch) lamination does the same and feels considerably better in the hand, which matters when the divider is part of a client-facing proposal. Gloss is the wrong choice here for the same reason it is wrong on a folder: fingerprints and corner whitening. Our lamination guide covers the trade-offs in detail, and the GSM guide maps weights to jobs.

The cut. Tabs are die-cut, which means a die has to exist for your tab layout. A standard 5-tab or 10-tab A4 layout uses an existing die and adds nothing to the price. A custom tab count, a custom tab depth, or a non-A4 page size needs a new die — a one-off cost that is worth absorbing only if you reorder the same set.

Standard tab geometries used in the UAE

Layout Tab width Extension beyond page Typical use
5-tab A4 set ~60mm 12–15mm Tender sections, contract schedules, board packs
10-tab A4 set ~30mm 12–15mm Training manuals, policy handbooks, HR files
12-tab A4 set ~25mm 12mm Monthly financial files, 12-month logbooks
Bank tab (single position) 50mm 12–15mm Repeating section markers, price-book sections
Full-height side tab Full page edge 15–20mm Heavy-use reference binders, catalogue sections

Two geometry rules that save reprints. First, keep the tab extension at 12–15mm: shorter than 12mm and fingers cannot grip it; longer than 15mm and the tabs protrude past the binder edge and get crushed. Second, print the tab legend on both faces of the tab, not just the front — a reader flipping backwards through a document sees the reverse face, and single-sided tabs look unfinished from behind.

Reinforcement: when to pay for mylar

For a divider that will be opened daily for a year — a workshop manual, a QHSE file, a reception reference binder — lamination alone is not enough at the punch holes. A mylar-reinforced binding edge (a clear or coloured plastic strip bonded along the punched edge) is the difference between a set lasting twelve months and lasting three. It adds to the per-set cost and is worth specifying only on high-traffic documents; for a tender that gets read twice and archived, laminated 400gsm card is correct and mylar is money wasted.

If your document is going into a ring binder, specify the punch at order: 2-hole 80mm centres is the UAE office standard, 4-hole is used for larger reference files. If it is going into wire-O or spiral binding, the dividers must be punched to the same pitch as the text block, which means the binder and the divider need to be produced together — one of the practical reasons to order dividers with the document rather than separately.

Real 2026 prices for the materials and binding behind a divider quote

Divider sets themselves are quoted per job, because tab count and die status dominate the price. But every input is a published store price, so you can sanity-check a quote before you accept it. All prices include 5% VAT.

Read the table as a cost floor, not a divider price. A 10-tab laminated A4 divider set is a 400gsm sheet printed both sides, laminated both sides, die-cut on an existing die and collated — the first three of those are visible in the AED 0.14 per-piece figure above; tab die-cutting, collation and punching are what sit on top. If a quote you have received is far above what those inputs imply, ask which part is die-making, because that is a one-off you keep.

Cheaper alternatives that actually work

For some jobs a printed divider is over-specified. Two honest alternatives:

Plain dividers plus printed tab labels. Buy standard unprinted card dividers and apply laminated 7 x 7cm printed stickers at AED 2.30 each, or economy stickers at AED 0.37. This is the right answer for an internal file where appearance matters less than the index working, and for a document whose section names change every quarter.

Printed section title pages instead of tabs. A full-bleed coloured A4 title page at 300gsm, with no tab, gives you visual section breaks for a fraction of a die-cut tab set. It will not let a reader find section 7 by feel, but in a bound booklet that is read front-to-back — a company profile, an annual report — nobody uses the tab anyway. See the company profile printing guide and the annual report guide for how those documents are usually structured.

How to order

  1. Tell us the document, not just the divider. Page size, total page count, binding method (ring binder, wire-O, perfect bound), and how many sets. Dividers punched to the wrong pitch are scrap, so the binding decision has to come first.
  2. Send the section list. The tab legends, in order, in the language(s) you need. If the set is bilingual, say which script leads on the tab face — Arabic layout rules are covered in our bilingual print design guide.
  3. Approve the die-line proof. You get a proof showing tab positions, extensions, the punch pattern and both tab faces. This is the step that catches the two classic errors: tab text too close to the cut, and tabs that overlap when collated.
  4. Production: 3–5 working days after artwork approval on an existing die. A new custom die adds a day or two. For tender deadlines, book the slot before the artwork is final — see the tender and bid document printing guide for the full same-week workflow.
  5. Delivery. Free within Dubai on orders over AED 800; elsewhere in the UAE and the GCC, charged by address and quantity and confirmed on the quote.

Frequently asked questions

What GSM should printed dividers be?

300gsm is the minimum for a document opened regularly; 400gsm art matt is the standard we recommend for tenders, board packs and manuals. Anything at or below 200gsm is a title page, not a divider — it will curl and the tab will fold. For binders in daily use, 760 micron board with a mylar-reinforced edge is the long-life specification.

Do dividers need to be laminated?

On the tab, yes. An unlaminated tab is the first thing to fail on a divider set, usually tearing at the root where it meets the page. Matt or velvet lamination both sides is the correct specification; gloss scuffs white at the corners and shows fingerprints.

How many tabs can you fit on an A4 divider set?

Twelve is the practical maximum on the long edge at a usable tab width of about 25mm. Beyond twelve sections, use two banks of tabs on different edges, or switch to printed section title pages with a contents sheet at the front.

Can you print on both sides of the tab?

Yes, and you should. A reader flipping backwards through the document sees the reverse tab face. Printing both faces costs almost nothing at the same lamination specification and is the single clearest marker of a professionally produced divider set.

Can I order a single set for one tender?

Yes. Single-copy work is normal for tender submissions — our single-copy A4 12-page booklet is AED 150 — and a one-off divider set is quoted the same way. Expect the per-set cost on a quantity of one to be high relative to a run of fifty, because die-cutting and collation setup do not scale down.

Will you match our brand colour on the tabs?

Yes. Use a Pantone spot colour if the tab colour is a corporate identity colour that must match your other print; a CMYK build will shift slightly between stocks and lamination types. Our Pantone vs CMYK guide explains when the spot colour is worth it.
