Your screen makes colour with light; a printing press makes colour with ink. RGB mixes red, green and blue light and can reach around 16.7 million colours. CMYK mixes cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink and reaches roughly half that. When you send an RGB file to a press, every colour that exists only in the screen's range has to be swapped for the nearest ink mix that does exist — and that swap is why your electric blue arrives purple, your neon green arrives olive, and your logo looks slightly wrong on 5,000 flyers you have already paid for.

The fix is not complicated, but it has to happen before the file reaches the press. This guide covers what actually changes, which colours are most at risk, how to check your artwork in under five minutes, and what it costs to print correctly in Dubai.

The two colour models, in one paragraph each

RGB is additive. A screen starts black and adds light. Add all three channels at full strength and you get white. Because light can be emitted at high intensity, screens produce colours — vivid cyans, saturated oranges, glowing greens — that simply have no ink equivalent. RGB is correct for websites, social media, presentations and anything viewed on a device.

CMYK is subtractive. A press starts with white paper and lays down ink that subtracts light. Cyan, magenta and yellow theoretically combine to black, but in practice they produce a muddy brown, so a fourth plate — K, for key — carries true black and shadow detail. CMYK is correct for anything printed on paper: business cards, flyers, brochures, packaging.

Which colours break, and how badly

Not everything shifts. Corporate navy, burgundy, most greys, skin tones and warm reds convert almost invisibly. The problems cluster in predictable places:

  • Bright blue → purple. The most common complaint in the industry. Screen blues around #0000FF sit far outside the CMYK gamut, and the press substitutes a mix heavy in magenta. If your brand blue is very saturated, expect a visible shift unless it is corrected manually.
  • Neon and fluorescent anything. Neon green, hot pink, safety orange — these are emitted-light colours. There is no four-colour ink recipe for them. They will print as a duller, flatter version of themselves every time.
  • Rich saturated greens. They lose intensity and drift towards olive.
  • Deep blacks in large areas. Black set to 100% K alone prints as a washed grey-black over a large panel. For panels bigger than a business card, use a rich black build — a common press-safe recipe is C60 M40 Y40 K100.
  • Small black text. The opposite rule. Body text must be 100% K only. Four-colour black text goes fuzzy the moment the plates are half a hair out of register.

What actually happens to an RGB file at the press

If you send an RGB PDF, it does not get rejected — it gets converted, either by the print software or the RIP, using a default profile you never chose. That is the real risk. The conversion is automatic, it is invisible to you, and it happens after your last chance to look at the result.

Convert the file yourself and you keep control: you see the shift on your own screen, you decide whether the shifted colour is acceptable, and you adjust the values you care about most — usually the logo — before anything is committed to plate. Same press, same paper, completely different outcome.

The five-minute artwork check

  1. Set the document colour mode to CMYK before you start designing, not at the end. In Illustrator and InDesign this is a document setting; in Photoshop it is Image › Mode › CMYK Color.
  2. Soft-proof. Use View › Proof Setup to preview the CMYK result while working. Colours that jump when you toggle the proof are the ones that will disappoint you in print.
  3. Check the gamut warning in the colour picker. If it flags your brand colour, decide now what it becomes rather than letting software decide later.
  4. Fix your blacks. Body text and small type: 100% K. Large black backgrounds: rich black. Never both in the same panel — the mismatch is visible.
  5. Check total ink coverage. Keep the sum of C+M+Y+K under about 300% on coated stock. Above that, ink stops drying properly and sheets can offset onto each other in the stack.
  6. Export as PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 with fonts embedded and images at 300 dpi. These formats flatten transparency predictably and lock the colour space.

Pantone, brand colours and what to do when the shift is unacceptable

If your brand colour is genuinely outside CMYK reach and the conversion is not acceptable — a common problem for tech companies and beverage brands with vivid identities — you have three practical routes:

  1. Accept a corrected CMYK build. Instead of accepting the automatic conversion, manually specify the closest CMYK values you find acceptable and lock them into your brand guidelines. Most UAE companies do this once and reuse the values forever.
  2. Choose the finish to compensate. Colour reads more saturated on glossy coated stock than on uncoated, and a gloss lamination deepens it further. Our lamination guide shows how much difference the finish makes.
  3. Use a metallic or foil element. Gold and silver cannot be printed in CMYK at all — the yellow-brown attempt always looks cheap. Real foil is a separate process and looks like metal because it is metal. See spot UV, foiling and embossing.

For flat colour work at volume, flyers behave the same way. A5 flyers, 2 sides, 135 GSM glossy: AED 155 for 1,000, AED 345 for 5,000, AED 555 for 10,000. On 170 GSM glossy the same A5 flyer is AED 270 for 1,000 and AED 840 for 5,000 — the heavier coated sheet holds solid colour blocks with less show-through. How to order without a colour surprise

  1. Convert and export the file in CMYK using the checklist above.
  2. Name your critical colour. When you place the order, tell us which single colour must be right — usually the logo. That is the one we watch on press.
  3. Ask for a proof on large or repeat runs. For anything over a few thousand pieces, or for a brand you will reprint quarterly, a proof pays for itself the first time it catches a shift.
  4. Print the whole brand kit together. Cards, letterheads and flyers run in the same window come off matching. Split across three months on three different stocks, they will not.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my blue logo print purple?

Because saturated screen blue sits outside the CMYK gamut and the automatic conversion adds magenta to reach it. Fix it by converting the file yourself and manually reducing the magenta in your blue build until it looks right in soft proof. Then save those CMYK values in your brand guidelines so it never happens again.

Can I just send an RGB file?

You can, and it will print — but the conversion then happens with default settings you never saw. On simple work with muted colours the difference is often invisible. On anything with a saturated brand colour, convert it yourself first.

Will the same file print identically on flyers and business cards?

Close, but not identical. Coated glossy stock, uncoated stock and laminated board absorb and reflect ink differently, so the same CMYK values look slightly different across substrates. If exact matching across items matters, print them in one order.

What resolution do images need to be?

300 dpi at final print size. An image that looks sharp on a website is usually 72 dpi and will look soft on paper. Scaling a 72 dpi image up in the layout does not add detail.

How do I get a true gold or silver?

Foil stamping or metallic ink — not CMYK. A four-colour attempt at gold prints as a flat mustard brown. Gold foil with spot UV on a 400 GSM card is AED 359 per 1,000.

What is rich black and when should I use it?

Rich black is black built from all four inks, typically around C60 M40 Y40 K100, and it is used for large solid black areas where 100% K alone looks grey. Keep small text and thin lines at 100% K only to avoid registration fuzziness.
