Lanyard, ID card holder or badge holder — which do you need?

The words get used interchangeably, so here is what each part actually is.

A lanyard — also called a neck strap, ID card lace, ID card tag, ID card rope or neck tag — is the printed band that goes around the neck. That is what carries your logo. Ours start at AED 1.05 for a double hook cord lanyard and AED 1.05 for lanyards with logo and epoxy doming.

An ID card holder or badge holder is the sleeve or frame that protects the card and clips onto the lanyard — see card holders at AED 175 per set.

The ID card itself is the printed staff, student or visitor credential. Ultra ID cards are AED 0.63 each, with gold and silver finishes at AED 1.40. For full staff identity sets, identity cards with punch are AED 445 — pre-punched so the lanyard clip threads straight through with no slot punching on site — and without punch AED 415.

A reel badge is the retractable holder that lets a wearer pull the card up to a reader and let it snap back — the lanyard with reel badge and safety lock is AED 3.50 and is the usual choice where staff badge in and out all day.

Widths, materials and attachments

Width. Our hook, safety lock and buckle lanyard is a 20 mm flat strap — the standard office and conference width, wide enough for a legible printed logo and a readable company name. Cord lanyards are the round, narrow alternative for a plainer look.

Materials. Flat polyester is the everyday workhorse and takes the sharpest print. RPET lanyards at AED 2.45 are woven from recycled polyester for organisations with a sustainability policy, and organic cotton lanyards at AED 2.80 give a soft, matte, natural finish. Epoxy doming adds a raised clear resin dome over a logo for a premium, hard-wearing badge effect.

Attachments. Choose the end fitting by how the card is carried: a metal lobster claw clasp (AED 0.63) or oval hook (AED 1.75) for a punched card, a crocodile clip (AED 0.84) or bulldog clip (AED 0.63) for a card in a holder, double hooks (AED 2.80) for a card that must hang flat and face forward, or a carabiner (AED 2.10) for keys and access fobs.

Safety and convenience. A safety lock (AED 1.05) is the breakaway fitting at the back of the neck that releases if the strap is pulled — required by most schools, hospitals, factories and warehouses. A lanyard buckle (AED 0.91) is the quick-release joint that lets the card be detached without taking the lanyard off. A mobile holder (AED 0.70) turns the lanyard into a phone strap, and the 4-in-1 lanyard charging cable (AED 12) is a 60 W, 120 cm cable with a hook for an ID card.

Staff ID cards, membership and access cards

Sending your artwork

For lanyard straps, send a print-ready PDF in CMYK at 300 dpi with 3 mm bleed, artwork built to the full strap length so the design repeats cleanly, and text kept clear of the stitched ends and the hook fold. Simple, high-contrast logos read best on a 20 mm strap — fine hairlines and small reversed-out type close up on woven material.

For ID cards, supply the layout at standard ID card size — the same footprint as a bank card — again as a print-ready CMYK PDF at 300 dpi with 3 mm bleed, and keep names, photos and barcodes at least 3 mm inside the trim so nothing is clipped by the rounded corners or the punch slot. Send staff names and photos as a separate spreadsheet and image folder rather than pasted into a design file.

What width are your lanyards?
