Spot UV is a clear gloss varnish applied to chosen areas of the card only — usually the logo — while the rest stays matt. The card is not more colourful; it catches the light differently in two places, and that is what makes someone turn it over.
Flat spot UV or 3D spot UV
Flat spot UV is a thin gloss layer: you see it, you barely feel it. 3D spot UV is built up thicker so the varnish stands proud of the surface and you can feel the logo with a fingertip. 3D costs more and needs bolder artwork — it does not reproduce hairlines — but it is the version people remember.
It needs a matt background to work
Spot UV on a glossy laminated card is nearly invisible: gloss on gloss has no contrast. Always pair it with matt lamination or, for the strongest effect, velvet (soft touch) lamination. That is why every spot UV card here is built on a matt or velvet base.
Designing for it
Pick one element: the logo, a monogram, a pattern, or a single headline. Spot UV applied to everything cancels itself out. Avoid strokes thinner than about 0.5 pt and type below 7 pt — the varnish spreads slightly and closes fine gaps. Supply the treated areas as a separate 100% black layer in your PDF, clearly named, so there is no guesswork on press.
